Sharing your Memories

It would be wonderful if this website contained more than just a few thoughts written by me. The Internet gives us a golden opportunity to share both memories and photographs - and both can be of the war years or of the trip itself.

Sharing words is easy - just email me and I'll make a web page.

Sharing photographs is also easy - just email them to me and I'll make a web page.

Photographs tend to be bigger files so if you'd like to get technical, read on:

1. Digital photographs can be emailled, and normal photos can be scanned and then emailled, but both tend to be quite large files and can take a long time to transmit even with broadband. The solution is to either go and have a cup of tea while they're transmitting or to make smaller copies. Windows XP can do this (see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/shareit/instant.mspx) or you can use a simple free program such as Pixresizer. Click here to download it. It's a Zip file which you'll need to unzip and then install the program. Email me if you don't know how to do this and I'll help you.

2. Web pages which have many photographs on them can be very slow so the solution is to have a page with small images called thumbnails. Clicking on a thumbnail takes you to the actual photograph. Making a webpage full of thumbnails each of which is a link to a photograph could take hours but a free program called Irfanview does it quickly and easily. Click here to download it. All you do is click on File > Thumbnails then select the folder where you put your pictures. A new window will appear with all the thumbnails. Click "File" in this new window you'll see "Save selected thumbs as HTML FILE". Give the page a name and click OK - it's as easy as that.

3. Photographs can be placed on a private website like this one or they can be placed on a public website designed for sharing photos. There are several of these and if you know of a good one then please let me know. The one I use is Kodak's Ofoto website which is now called Kodak Gallery. My photos are there in a shared album. See if you can find them and let me know.
