"No Future Left Behind"

What do students think of the education they are receiving? It seems they feel the same as I do - that a crisis is emerging.

But don't just take my word for it. The message is emerging right across the education community and is summed up nicely by Canadian business executive and author, Don Tapscott.

He says:

  • The Internet is a new medium which enables knowledge sharing and collaborative learning.

  • A new generation has grown up digital and they learn best through collaboration and discovery.

  • Unfortunately, schools are still based on an old model that's teacher-focused and one-size-fits-all. In it, students are isolated in the learning process and learn how to memorise facts and perform well in tests."

Mr Tapscott said this in a video which is no longer available online although the website which hosted it (http://grownupdigital.com) still is. He set a competition: "if the current curriculum is not working, what should a future curriculum look like?" Responses had to be in video form.

This film is one of the responses he received. It's an excellent description of the problem through children's eyes. School pupils wrote and performed it and I found it absolutely compelling. It runs for six minutes and I really recommend that you watch it.
